The Dugong (Dugong dugon), as one of the few herbivorous marine mammals, plays a crucial role in the dynamics of coastal ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows. Listed as Vulnerable by the International :union: for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
this study is designed as a systematic review study aimed to
collect, analyze and integrate information about the status of Dugong in the Persian Gulf. this article reviews the biology of this species, distribution and its main habitats in the Persian Gulf, threatening factors for survival, and national and international conservation efforts. this species faces multiple threats including oil and industrial pollution, coastal development, and seagrass habitat degradation, bycatch with fishing nets and collision with boats. there are different ways to protect these species .the establishment of marine protected areas , hunting prohibition , carrying out research in important habitats and offset paths , strengthening long - term monitoring programmes, promoting awareness and training of local communities, and developing regional cooperation for sustainable conservation of dugong are among the cases that can help to maintain this species .the findings of this review show that protection of Dugong requires a comprehensive approach based on scientific evidence and multilevel participation to ensure the continued environmental impact of this species in marine ecosystems .
