Miyangaran Wetland, one of the important wetlands of Khuzestan Province, is located approximately 210 km northeast of Ahvaz, within the southern Zagros ecosystem, at an elevation ranging from 822 to 828 m above sea level. Covering an area of about 40 km², this wetland plays a significant ecological, hydrological, and socio-economic role in maintaining environmental sustainability in the region. Natural wetlands, as valuable aquatic ecosystems, provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including water flow regulation, flood control, biodiversity conservation, water quality improvement, and support for local livelihoods.
In recent years, however, Miyangaran Wetland has been increasingly exposed to anthropogenic pressures and environmental changes, such as reduced water inflows, pollution from agricultural and urban activities, overgrazing, and land-use changes in surrounding areas. The continuation of these pressures may lead to a decline in ecological functions and a reduction in the resilience of this valuable ecosystem.
The present study aims to identify the ecological significance of Miyangaran Wetland and to propose practical strategies for its conservation, restoration, and sustainable management. Based on the principles of sustainable wetland ecosystem management and an assessment of existing challenges, this study emphasizes the necessity of adopting an integrated management approach that focuses on water resource protection, pollution control, stakeholder participation, and institutional coordination. The findings of this research can provide a scientific basis for environmental planning and decision-making processes aimed at conserving and sustaining Miyangaran Wetland, as well as other similar wetlands within the southern Zagros ecosystem.
